Properties

Aloe vera contains 75 potentially active constituents: vitamins, enzymes, minerals, sugars, lignin, saponins, salicylic acids and amino acids. Its antibacterial, antiviral, and antiseptic properties make it effective for treating skin issues.

What is Aloe Vera?

Its scientific name is Aloe barbadensis miller, but we commonly call it Aloe Vera. It belongs to the Asphodelaceae family (which was earlier considered part of the Liliaceae family, so you might hear that too!).

It's a perennial plant, meaning it lives for more than two years. It grows in a rosette pattern. The leaves are triangular, thick, and fleshy, typically green to grey-green, and can have some white flecks. In India, it's commonly found in states like Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu.

Aloe Vera has been used for centuries, even thousands of years, for its medicinal, beauty, and health benefits. Ancient Egyptians called it "the plant of immortality," and Greek scientists considered it a "universal panacea" (a cure-all!). In Ayurveda, it's known as "Kumari" and is valued for its cooling, bitter, and laxative properties.

If you cut open a mature Aloe Vera leaf, you'll see three main layers; outer layer, latex layer and inner clear gel. Gel is clear, jelly-like substance found in the center of the leaf. This gel is mostly water (about 99%) but the remaining 1% is packed with beneficial compounds. Its cooling, anti-inflammatory, and moisturizing properties make it excellent for soothing sunburns and minor burns, while also serving as a fantastic, non-greasy moisturizer. Furthermore, its antibacterial qualities can help reduce acne and blemishes.

This gel helps in conditioning hair and scalp, reducing dandruff, and promoting healthy hair growth.

What does Aloe Vera do to your skin?

Aloe Vera moisturizes and soothes skin, effectively relieving sunburns and minor irritations due to its cooling and anti-inflammatory properties. It also aids in healing wounds, reducing acne, and can help diminish signs of aging by promoting cell regeneration and collagen production.
