Alpha arbutin

Alpha Arbutin
Name Alpha arbutin
INCI Name 4-Hydroxyphenyl-alpha-D-glucopyranoside

Properties

Alpha arbutin is soluble in water, making it suitable for use in aqueous-based cosmetic and skincare formulations. It works by impeding the production of melanin, which is the pigment responsible for skin color. It possesses antioxidant properties that help protect the skin from oxidative stress and environmental damage. Acts by reducing tyrosinase activity, which reduces the formation of melanin in your skin. It is commonly used as a skin-lightening agent.

What is Alpha arbutin?

4-Hydroxyphenyl-alpha-D-glucopyranoside, also known as α-Arbutin, is a glycosylated hydroquinone compound used primarily in cosmetics for its skin-lightening properties. It is a synthetic derivative of arbutin, structurally characterized as the α-anomer of arbutin, with a glucose molecule bonded to a 4-hydroxyphenyl group (molecular formula: C12H16O7, CAS: 84380-01-8).

It works by inhibiting tyrosinase, an enzyme involved in melanin production, making it effective for treating hyperpigmentation, dark spots, and uneven skin tone. Compared to hydroquinone, α-Arbutin is considered safer and more stable, with less risk of irritation.

Mechanism of Action:

α-Arbutin competitively inhibits tyrosinase, a key enzyme in melanogenesis (melanin production). By binding to tyrosinase’s active site, it reduces the conversion of tyrosine to melanin, effectively lightening dark spots and hyperpigmentation.

Unlike hydroquinone, which directly inhibits melanin synthesis and can be harsh, α-Arbutin slowly releases hydroquinone in the skin via enzymatic cleavage, minimizing irritation.

Generally recognized as safe by regulatory bodies (e.g., FDA, EU Cosmetics Regulation) at recommended concentrations. However, excessive use or high concentrations may cause mild irritation in rare cases.

What does Alpha arbutin do to your skin?

Alpha arbutin brightens skin by inhibiting melanin production, reducing dark spots and hyperpigmentation. It promotes an even complexion and is gentle, often used in anti-pigmentation products. Pair with sunscreen for best results.
