What is Sesame Seeds?

Imagine tiny, tiny flat beads. That's kind of what a sesame seed looks like. These plants grow in pods, like little green pockets, and when the pods are ready, they open up and spill out these amazing seeds. Sesame seeds are super old! People have been growing and eating them for thousands of years. They're even mentioned in ancient stories!

In India, we call them "til" (pronounced "till"). You might have seen them on your food, or maybe even in some sweet treats!

  • White sesame seeds: These are the most common ones you'll see. They've had their outer skin (or "hull") removed, which makes them lighter in color and gives them a milder, nutty taste.
  • Black sesame seeds: These have their hull still on, so they're darker and have a slightly stronger, earthier flavor. They're often used in Chinese cooking.

They have lots of healthy fats, which are important for your brain and body to work well. They also have protein, which helps build strong muscles.

Sesame oil is rich in fatty acids, like linoleic acid and oleic acid. These are super important because they help to create a protective barrier on your skin. Sesame oil is packed with powerful antioxidants, especially Vitamin E and unique compounds called lignans. These antioxidants help to fight off something called free radicals. It also helps to repair skin damage caused by environmental factors like pollution and UV rays.

Sesame seeds, primarily in the form of their oil, benefit your skin by deeply moisturizing it, providing powerful antioxidant protection against damage, and possessing anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties that soothe and help cleanse the skin.
