Properties

Turmeric contains antioxidants and anti-inflammatory components, which contribute to a natural glow and luster for your skin. It has various essential vitamins and minerals like beta carotene, ascorbic acid (Vitamin C), pyridoxine (Vitamin B6), niacin (Vitamin B3), calcium, flavonoids, fibre, iron, potassium and zinc. Turmeric can target pores and calm the skin due to its anti-inflammatory properties. It’s also known to reduce scarring.

What is Turmeric?

Turmeric, scientifically known as Curcuma longa, is a vibrant, golden-yellow spice that comes from the rhizome (which is an underground stem, much like ginger) of the turmeric plant. The plant itself looks a bit like a lily, with large, oblong leaves.

Turmeric is famous for its bright yellow-orange color, which is why it's often called the "golden spice." It has a warm, earthy, slightly bitter, and pungent flavour.

The active compound in turmeric largely comes from a group of natural compounds called curcuminoids, with curcumin being the most important and active one. Curcumin is responsible for turmeric's characteristic color and most of its powerful health benefits.

Turmeric has been a cornerstone of Indian life for thousands of years, revered in Ayurveda. This is perhaps its most famous medicinal property. Curcumin is a powerful anti-inflammatory compound, used traditionally for joint pain, swelling, and various inflammatory conditions.

In India, applying a paste of turmeric (often with a little water or oil) to cuts, minor burns, and scrapes is a common home remedy.

Turmeric is a very popular ingredient in homemade face packs (like ubtan) for bridal ceremonies and daily skincare. It's believed to improve complexion, reduce blemishes, and give the skin a natural glow. Its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties can help in reducing acne and redness.

What does Turmeric do to your skin?

Turmeric offers significant benefits for the skin, acting as a natural anti-inflammatory and antiseptic to soothe irritation, reduce redness, and combat acne. It also helps brighten the complexion, diminish blemishes, and promotes an even skin tone, contributing to an overall healthy and radiant glow.
