Name | Vitamin B5 |
INCI Name | Panthenol |
Vitamin B5, or Panthenol, acts as a humectant and emollient, drawing moisture into the skin to enhance hydration retention. It strengthens the skin’s surface, supports cell growth, and repairs the skin barrier. Vitamin B5 accelerates wound healing by promoting new tissue formation and reduces scar visibility by supporting protein development. Its anti-inflammatory properties can also alleviate acne and redness.
What is Vitamin B5?Pantothenic acid is a water-soluble B-complex vitamin composed of pantoic acid linked to β-alanine via an amide bond. Its derivative, panthenol (provitamin B5), is an alcohol form (C9H19NO4) commonly used in skincare due to its stability and skin penetration.
In the skin, Coenzyme A supports keratinocyte proliferation and lipid synthesis, which are vital for maintaining epidermal structure and function. This enhances skin resilience and supports the production of ceramides, crucial for the lipid matrix of the stratum corneum.
Vitamin B5 in skincare:At concentrations of 1–5% (common in skincare), panthenol has been shown to improve skin elasticity and reduce transepidermal water loss, enhancing overall skin health.
