Properties

Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It shields the skin from damage caused by solar radiation and UV light, potentially reducing wrinkles, aiding in wound healing, and minimizing scar visibility. Vitamin E oil can be applied directly to the skin or incorporated into lotions, creams, and gels for its beneficial effects.

What is Vitamin E?

Vitamin E is not a single compound, but rather a group of eight different compounds, including four tocopherols (alpha, beta, gamma, and delta) and four tocotrienols (alpha, beta, gamma, and delta). Of these, alpha-tocopherol is the most biologically active form in humans and is the one primarily recognized to meet human requirements.

Since Vitamin E is fat-soluble, it's often found in foods that contain fats. Good sources include Vegetable Oils (Wheat germ oil, sunflower oil, safflower oil, corn oil, soybean oil, olive oil, almond oil), nuts (Almonds, hazelnuts, peanuts, pine nuts, Brazil nuts), Seeds (sunflower seed), Green Leafy Vegetables (Spinach, broccoli, kale, Swiss chard), Fruits (Avocados, mangoes, kiwis, red bell peppers) and Fish (Salmon, trout, abalone).

Vitamin E protects body cells and tissues from damage caused by harmful molecules called free radicals. Free radicals are unstable molecules generated by normal metabolic processes in the body, as well as by exposure to environmental factors like pollution, UV radiation, and cigarette smoke.

Due to its antioxidant properties, Vitamin E is a popular ingredient in skincare products. It can help protect the skin from environmental damage, support wound healing, and contribute to overall skin health. Some anecdotal evidence suggests it can help moisturize skin, reduce itching, and improve the appearance of scars, though more scientific research is needed for many of these topical claims.

What does Vitamin E do to your skin?

Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant for your skin. It helps protect cells from damage caused by environmental stressors like UV rays and pollution. Additionally, it deeply moisturizes, strengthens the skin barrier, and can soothe inflammation, promoting overall skin health.
